video I made in 2019 with the first home recording of Ishmael. I took the photo of my then-housemate Conor Williams in Poughkeepsie, Ny while we were on a walk.
LYRICS: the phone call ends and the fact remains that I'm left with my worries and a hundred things to say. Can't understand, it's a mystery why you won't speak a word but you'll write to me. maybe you're a sailor with private worlds in your mind sending messages in bottles for civilians to find. what a catch! what a treasure, this vessel on the beach. i'll carry it forever but I sure do miss your speech. ishmael, oh ishmael! come on home, we wish you well! ishmael, oh ishmael!
ok but when u say

this was my old apartment, and yes, that was (and still is in my current place) the studio ehehehehehe
2011-2015
in the old days, everything was recorded through my laptop. if i wanted to record a song that was just me singing over my guitar, i would hit "record" in Garageband and try to get it all in one take. then I'd put headphones in and record the vocals through there. any electric guitar parts were played through my amp in a live room (which is why the summer 2016 album on my bandcamp sounds like absolute dog water)
2016-2022
eventually i realized that my phone had a better mic than my laptop, so i started recording each single take or part in the voice memo on my phone. after i recorded a part, I'd immediately import it onto my laptop, line it up where it was supposed to be in Garageband, and repeat the process. this actually worked relatively well but the amount of parts I was adding was getting to be too annoying to have to constantly switch between phone and laptop.i asked for a little interface for Christmas somewhere around 2019 so I could plug my guitar into that and run it through my laptop but I was too scared of new tech that I didn't actually use it for a few years.
2022-now
in 2022, I decided to make "Therapy Is Working" and i wanted it to sound at least a little more polished than anything I'd put out before. someone gave me an effects pre-amp for free, so i decided to see what that was about. for guitars/bass, i run them through the pre-amp, then through the interface, and then right into my laptop so I can sit at my desk and layer everything in real time in Reaper (grown-up software!!!) for drums/vocals/keys/ other things, I have two mics that i run through the interface into my laptop. someone gave me a third so now i need to rethink how I do those. this set-up also allows me to transport everything so I can record loud vocals in a (parked) car if needed since Reaper doesn't require internet
and for any curious gearheads......
this is the preamp I use (Digitech GSP1101). i went to actually buy a guitar from this guy off of Facebook marketplace. he was v nice and let me try the guitar out. he liked the song I played a lot (can't remember what it was) but he was like "hey take this for free." so for anyone curious on the guitar tones on "Therapy", they came from this thing
if you've ever asked "is it possible to just like plug your guitar into your laptop?" the answer is yes if u run it through something like this (Scarlet Focusrite 2i2). I can either run two mics into this and record on my laptop, or I can plug the preamp into one channel and leave a second to record scratch vocals. literally im just sitting at my desk playing guitar.
